Medical Herbalism

Holistic health practitioner in East Devon

As a registered Medical Herbalist (MNIMH), trained in traditional herbal medicine and a root cause approach, I work the body’s natural intelligence to restore harmony and balance.  Despite the advances and complexities of modern life, our biology remains essentially unchanged and traditional medicine is as relevant today as it has always been.

Getting to the heart of the matter:
Many people's health issues have numerous contributing factors, and this is especially true in today’s complex and fast-paced world.  As well as exploring your medical and health history, during a consultation, we fully explore the environmental and lifestyle factors that might be contributing to your health condition.

Time and space:
Consultation times are generous - an initial consultation is up to 90 minutes - allowing you time to talk about what you’re experiencing, and for us to explore and uncover possible drivers of your condition. Being heard is often part of the medicine too.

Traditional and modern approach:
When considering how best to approach a patient’s health concern, I often look through both a traditional lens and a contemporary one.  A traditional perspective takes into account a person’s energetics and humoral balance: this can be very useful when no specific diagnosis has been found or if symptoms aren’t improving with herbal medicines.  Diagnostic testing can also be undertaken when a deeper understanding is needed.

Individualised medicine tailored especially to you:
Medicines can be prescribed as tinctures (alcoholic extracts), teas, powders or capsules according to need or preference. Whichever form they come in, they are made from whole herbs, preserving the vitality and balance of the plants, and medicines are blended specifically for you.  Tailored nutritional and lifestyle suggestions are often part of your personalised treatment plan.

Integration with mainstream healthcare:
I am trained in same diagnostic skills as a GP, check for medicine interactions, and to recognise red flags, referring on to other healthcare providers when needed.  I’m also happy to communicate with your GP, when helpful.

Who can herbal medicine help?
Herbal medicine is for anyone who would like support for their health using a natural approach.  For example:

  • If you have symptoms that affect your quality of life?

  • If you’ve tried ‘everything’ but still don’t feel well?

  • Despite investigation, you have no specific diagnosis?

  • If you’re keen to try a holistic approach?

If you would like to find out more about how I might be able to help, please email me and we can organise a free initial telephone conversation to see if it might be for you.

In-person clinics are in Sidmouth and Axminster in East Devon, and I also offer online appointments.
